This is a bit OT, but I just read Tony’s description on eHam of his first CW QSO with Sandy WA6BXH (sk). A very moving tribute.

Sandy & I went to high school together. Sandy assisted me in my first CW QSO as well. Unlike Tony’s case, Sandy was in the same room as me. At the time, I was a new Novice while Sandy’s Novice license had expired a year or two previous. Still, his CW skill and knowledge of “the ropes” was impeccable even though he was limited to about 20wpm. That was a lot faster than my 6 or 7 wpm at the time.

We sat next to each other when we took the FCC exam for our General class licenses in 1967. Years later, while he was in Japan, we found we could exchange e-mail via the packet radio network, him in Japan and me in California. This was, of course, years before internet based email was generally available.

Sandy was certainly a “ham’s Ham”. He is still missed.

I hope this note gets passed to Tony VK2MS. Thanks for the bandwidth.

Good luck with the station. You deserve good luck, having the misfortune of being Lancastrians! Hope to work you under our special event callsign GB0YD (Yorkshire Day) on 1st August next year.
Unfortunately my 80/40 metre antennas are down at the moment. I’ll try to work you from the car /mobile.

Hi, I’ve just watched your GB5LLB youtube video. What a great ambassador for our hobby Rebbecca is.Especially bearing in mind her (young)age & being newly licensed, but she operated very confidantly & in a proffessional manner – a credit to your club & the hobby. Hi Les and thanks for contacting us. We have a Foundation Course at the beginning of November which Dave might like to consider attending. Alternatively we can do some home tutoring with a view to putting Dave through his Foundation exam in February.
